Health Care Simulations

US Health Care in Transition Simulation

The US Health Care in Transition Simulation is a strategic financial simulation of a US hospital. It allows users to look into the future and see the potential effects of changes in the health care business environment, and the potential implications of operational and strategic decisions. It shows the individual and combined effects of volume changes, payment and expense changes, and potential effects of emerging issues like ACOs, bundled payments, employer “dumping” into public exchanges, and risk and capitation agreements. It can be customized for any hospital or health system.

Uses:

This simulation is a uniquely powerful strategic thinking tool that places an enormous amount of analytic power at the fingertips of executives, physician leaders, and Trustees. It plays out five years of very complex business dynamics within seconds, and its ability to compress time allows users to incorporate the simulated results seamlessly into strategic conversations. The realistic decisions, dynamics, and results, and the user-friendly interactivity of this simulation encourage users to become highly engaged with the issues.

The US Health Care in Transition Simulation provides a powerful catalyst for discussion of key challenges facing hospitals and health systems, and it can be used in conjunction with many other strategic and market development efforts.

Fitzgerald Medical Center Simulation

The Fitzgerald Medical Center Simulation is a sophisticated management simulation of a US hospital. It illustrates the complexities and trade-offs associated with executive management decisions in hospitals and health systems, and it demonstrates the way in which business environment changes influence performance. The simulation is generally used in a one day workshop. Groups of 4 participants function as executive management teams and run a virtual hospital, making decisions over a 5 year time frame. The simulation is followed by a structured debrief that allows participants to reflect on their experiences during the simulation, and to solidify and clarify learnings. The simulation includes a User Guide and case study, and it can be customized for any hospital or health system.

Uses:

This simulation allows executives and physician leaders to see the whole organization perspective, to evaluate the complex trade-offs and potential unintended consequences associated with management decisions, and to build awareness of the potential effects of business environment changes.

Various versions of this simulation have been used by several thousand health care executives and physicians in executive education and leadership development programs throughout the US.

The Fitzgerald Medical Center Simulation is a highly effective leadership development tool, and it can be used in conjunction with many other executive education and leadership development activities.
